Cabling and Computing Advantages in MRI Monitoring System

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important diagnostic tool that uses strong magnetic fields and radiofrequency (RF) waves to generate patient images. Compared with systems that use radiation, MRIs are considered to be safer for patients. However, improper patient positioning or equipment use can lead to RF burns for patients.

A thermal imaging system can be used to continuously monitor patient temperatures as they undergo the procedure. Real-time monitoring alerts MRI staff of temperature changes at a specific location, giving them time to alter the patient’s position or scan protocol before an injury occurs.

The MRI thermal imaging system deploys an infrared camera that acquires thousands of surface temperature measurements continuously to help clinicians and technicians identify potential RF burn sources.

The specialty camera incorporates Pleora’s embedded video interface technology. The embedded hardware converts camera images into a GigE Vision compliant video stream that is transmitted over a single, extended-reach cable to processing equipment in a control or observation room. Data is streamed directly into a processing PC, bypassing the cost and complexity of a traditional frame grabber, and then transmitted to a touchscreen computing display.

The system continuously scans the MRI environment and alerts operators if a thermal hot spot is forming or conductive items are present on the patient.
