Reduce Costs and Complexity of Telepresence Robots

Telepresence robots require instantaneous transfer of imaging data from a camera to a processor to precisely navigate, while the visual, auditory, and tactical technologies must all work together at near-zero latency to reproduce a level of care that rivals an in-person visit.

In this application, images from existing cameras used for inspection and navigation in a medical robot are converted to Ethernet or USB 3.0 video streams by external frame grabbers. Alternatively, embedded video interface hardware provides manufacturers with a straightforward way to integrate GigE or USB 3.0 video connectivity directly into their products.

Video, power, and control data is transmitted over flexible, low-cost Ethernet or USB cables directly to ports on an integrated single-board computing platform. By eliminating the need for PCIe frame grabbers within the robot, manufacturers can migrate to embedded processing to reduce system complexity, component count, and costs. In addition, smaller footprint computing helps decrease the weight and power consumption of the robot to extend battery life, translating into more patient visits between charges.
